Bad Bunny and His Cultural Impact
From being a bagger at a supermarket to having the most streamed album in Spotify history, Benito Antonio Martinez Ocasio aka Bad Bunny has impacted the Latino community with his 2022 album 'Un Verano Sin Ti.
Receiving over 183 million streams on its first day, Bad Bunny left us with a taste of the Carribean by using different styles of music such as Reggaeton, Dem Bow, and Salsa. 'Un Verano Sin Ti hasn't only given us different styles of music but also has shown us his rejection against Latino stereotypes such as 'Machismo' and Misogyny, something that not a lot of artist are willing to do; stating in his ‘Andrea' song, "Pero todo se ha complicado, como si ser mujer fuera un pecado”.
Quote-“I think it’s the happiest album of my career”.-Bad Bunny
Benito, along with his music have brought up controversial issues such as the white gentrification of the island of Puerto Rico. With his song 'El Apagon' , meaning ‘The Blackout', he talks about how Puerto Rico is their land and how it's being taken away from them. Stating, "Lo que me pertenece a mi, se lo quedan ellos, que se vayan ellos", meaning "What belongs to me, they keep it, they should leave". Becoming the most streamed album in Spotify with over 15 billion streams, Bad Bunny has left an impact with his album, and songs with deep meaning he has shown us what Puerto Rico has to offer. Definitely an album to listen, especially in a summer drive.
